In 2002, Goz co-founded the Green Century Institute with consumer activist Marc Kasky and philanthropist Henry Dakin, an information clearinghouse for sustainable community solutions with a focus on Califia, a proposed Bay Area eco-city for 10,000 residents.

The non-profit provided a variety of consulting and advisory public services and produced a range of events and workshops, including the Paradox Conferences at Arcosanti ’97, ’99 and 2001, the San Francisco Green Cities Expo at UNEP World Environment Day in June 2005, and the Earth Day Digital Be-In events with Paul Hawken, Janine Benyus and other sustainable culture and green technology leaders, and many specialized salons and workshops.

Green Century Institute

The Green Century Institute (GCI), founded in 2002 by Goz and Marc Kasky, focused on advancing sustainable communities through education, technology, and innovative urban design. With initiatives like the Califia ecocity project, a proposed sustainable urban settlement for 7,000–10,000 residents near San Francisco, GCI worked with leading experts to develop models for ecologically sound living. Collaborating with NGOs, the United Nations, and technology innovators, GCI leveraged ICT resources for sustainability programs like Techné Verde and the Green City Solutions group. While offering consulting services in project development, technology, design, media, and event production, GCI also produced events and media to inspire and promote sustainable practices.

In this unprecedented era of global climate change and societal unrest, now more than ever there is an urgent need for working design solutions to implement large scale sustainable urban projects. Califia is envisioned as a world-class real estate development and model ecocity that synergizes leading edge green architectural design, advanced energy and information systems, and a new generation of innovative social frameworks and civic organizations that encourage a healthy and ecologically sustainable lifestyle. -Michael Gosney
